Once upon a time, a prince fell in love with a peasant woman.

and went blur about how he should react, what should he do.

He spent all his youth thinking and thinking

Until he was too old to do anything

Bedridden, he was, one day.
And finally died a lonely prince.

This happened on a Once Upon a Time,
where a prince fell for a peasant woman

and nothing happened.

A little girl in a yellow cape was selling matches in the boulevards of Sorrowfull. She ran into a flyer that said: Help Me Find Love? The flyer has a big question mark with no pictures. The little girl picked the flyer and stared long at it. Then she took out a match and lit it. She burnt the paper and felt warm for a few moments. A homeless man and his son came to her carrying more flyers. She took out more matches, burnt the papers and soon, more people came to her with flyers in their hands. The papers are too many that the people and the little girl created a huge bonfire where everybody sit around it in a big circle.

Warmth lingered in the boulevards of Sorrowfull that night. And Love was then found.

There was this one time I got so afraid of losing you, and there you were, right in front of me, smiling and said, "Oh! Hi. I was just thinking about you." It was during a hot evening in February 2012 where I was walking home, thinking about you, and you were walking home, thinking about me.

“Sometimes we have to let it go, honey,” said Mummy.

“I don’t think I can,” said Cloud.
. . . . .

November Air were dancing with glee. Sunlight beamed its light onto them. They all look blissful with their partners. Laughter was ripe among them. Then, they stopped. Another dance would be performed. Their toes ready, fingers settled in position. Soon, the Winter ballet started. November Air continued dancing on branches of pine trees, bare oak trees, and the trees, too, swayed from left to right, pleasuring grief and loneliness of the sharp air.

Autumn was about to end.

Sunlight went dim. In an instant, everything turned darker. The music of Autumn slowed down. A hush was heard. November air waned into nothingness. December Wind took charge. And every cloud in the kingdom gathered.

White flakes slowly fell onto rivers and lakes, friends with gills swam deeper towards warmth, soon, the water stood still in tranquility.

Every crisp from every leaves frozen beneath layers of coldness, furry friends lullaby their little ones, humming soft notes to soothe their beating hearts, to calm their minds, while the others waited for sweet dreams to visit them.

Cloud was staring at the life under him hid themselves from the snow. He watched the colour of Earth turned pale. Sighed upon the sad state of Earth, he refused to give out snow despite his mother’s urges.

“I’m worried that my friends will get sick,” Cloud said, denying his ego.

“Why, they are all cocooned in their shelters, warm enough to catch a cold,” Mummy reassured him.

“Come on, chap! You’ve whined about this all November already! Look at Stratus, ready and all. Why can’t you be him, eh?” Cumulus teased him.

Stratus was staring at his own reflection on the big lakes. He was admiring on how much he had grown darker, bigger, and tougher than his two brothers. Not even the charming giggles of Cirruses could take his eyes off of himself.

In seconds, snow had covered Earth. December wind had sprinkled crystals of snowflakes everywhere, decorating Earth as they wish. The whiteness blinded Clouds eyes. He turned his eyes off the surface and saw little by little, his brothers began to fade away. Mummy was out of sight. He panicked a little. Stratus became smaller and smaller. He watched his arms became shorter as Stratus threw flakes upon flakes onto Earth. Later, he vanished. Cloud looked for Cumulus. Then, he found him to be darker and showering Earth with freezing droplets.

“Cumulus! Stop! Stop pouring water! You’ll die! Stop!” shouted Cloud.

“Aww… I know that. We all know that,” responded Cumulus calmly with a smile.

“Then, why are you doing this?”

“Sometimes, that’s how loving works. Aren't we to give and…”

“Disappear? And not even a credit granted?”

“We give to give. We do not ask to be given in return.” Then, the rain stopped.

There was not a single cloud left except for Cloud. He looked for other surviving clouds. Nowhere. Nobody. Soon, his anger grew.

We give to give. We do not ask to be given in return. The words chanted in his head, repeating itself one after the other.

“Sometimes, we have to let it go, honey.”

“To let what go, Mummy? Raindrops? Snowflakes? Which one?”

“Love.”

Cloud hugged himself tightly, cradling himself from left to right refuses to sacrifice his existence for Earth. However, what’s left for him now? With no one around, isn’t solitude is just the same as loneliness? And isn’t loneliness is no different than disappearing? Unnoticed, his tears began to form drizzles that were then collected by the wind. Some fell onto a robin with its right wing stuck under a layer of thin ice. The water droplets melted the ice off the robin and later it flew back to its nest happily. Cloud stopped crying. He felt grateful for the robin. At least it didn’t die in this cold weather. He moved onto a grain field and began to let out snowflakes, blanketing the crop from the cold air. Seeing each grain lying underneath the sheet of snow sent bliss to his heart.

We have to let it go. He understands it now.

“Be warm, everyone. See you in spring. I hope,” he whispered to Earth as he slowly vanished into thin air. The snow finally stopped. And every living on Earth slept silently that December with their wishful hearts of meeting each other again soon.

Right now I feel like postponing my graduation. Yes. I can graduate next semester but do I really want to? I don't think I really live my university years. Haven't yet sort out any universities I'm aiming for pursuing my masters at, haven't sent out resumes, heck, haven't even prepared one. Not even have much to be put in it anyway. But my course mates ensured me that graduating early is the best choice. Taekwondo mates, in return, haunt me with inquiries: Why? Why early? What are you gonna do? Why the rush? Peer pressure, indeed making me dwell in this cul-de-sac. Next semester, short semester, the other next semester? Pick one or forever hold your peace. Somehow, a little part of me begs for a therapist. But that thug ain't gonna live with the choice made. I will. Istikharah prayer. Ok. Noted. But what else? Yes, I've listed the pros and cons of graduating early and later. None gave me a precise answer. Ya see, this has developed into quite a monster. Making me angry throughout the semester, feeding me frustrations and whatnot just for a single deadly choice. Well, not that deadly. To be honest, I really don't know what will happen ahead; after graduation. Answering What Do You Love Doing questions is easy but making the right choices isn't. The end of the tunnel is filled with vagueness. Like I'm disallowed at making a choice despite liking so many things. My soul needs to calm down. These pestering voices overwhelm, yes, so I need to calm down. Deep down, I don't want to graduate early. Graduate early, are you kidding me? My train just got off the track and at the moment, I'm still lifting the heavy wheels back to where they belong. The engine hasn't warmed up yet but I choose to get off of it and leave it there? No way. So be it I'm late at holding that scroll in my hands. At least I have more time to fill in the empty blanks of my will-yet-be-written resume. Oh great. I've made my choice. By ranting it out here, lol. And if I choose to finish in solid 4 years, I can add Creative Writing subject I've always wanted. Hooo Yeahhh!

Staring about the dragon-shaped cloud, long, spread through the light blue sky, I heard sighs from my tired father. The rest of us in the car were a bit quiet except for the loud Korean music from Asyraf's phone.

In another 100 metres, turn slightly right, says the woman's voice from Nokia Drive, out of the blue.

Hey ho! Hey ho! *foreign gibberish words*, barks the Korean singer.

I felt a little old, sitting quietly in the car, slightly irritated by the noise from the speakers. I wished for some classical music to match with the stream of trees outside the car window. The Dragon cloud was really looking all grand; its head on our left, its lengthy body curvy all the way to the front and elongated to the right side of the car. As if shielding us all through our long tiring journey home. It made me forgot about my fatigue days I've left behind. It made me temporarily deaf about the disturbing da-da-da-dum-cak-kala-dum-das-tas from the earlier speakers.

"Can you please turn down the volume?" Even asking this to my brother who's humming the unknown song made me felt old. Not sure why I asked him that when it didn't bother me so much then.

       "Why should I?" He rebelled.

"I think you should quiet down. The song is..." Mama said suddenly and went back to sleep. Apparently she was too tired to finish her words. The music then played a humdrum tone.

Then, Nisah invited us to play the Only-Three-Words game. Despite the low battery life of our Samsung Tab, she touched the screen picking out Memo. She typed, Special Day, as the title and we began playing. Each of us got to type only three words and turned out none of our sentence made sense. It was easy to detect which sentence was whose. Asyraf's were full of weird animal characters. Nisah's were full of feelings and mispelled Mat Rempit-ish words. Mine were of more advanced vocabularies and those made the two laughed to teary eyes.

The day was about to embrace night time. Dusk it was when we were asked to stop our giggles.

"What did I said about laughing too much? It darkens the heart. Say Astaghfirullahala'ziim, now," mama ordered Nisah. I sensed jealousy from her for not being able to have fun like us three. But then I realised Nisah did laugh the loudest. Instantly, she recited the Arabic words. Repetitively, she recited it again to prevent her from being drifted away too much.

We continued playing until our story developed a very disturbing plot filled with neurotic characters; involving ants, elephants with four trunks, monkeys with four wings, a goat, a danseur grandfather and a mysterious narrator called "I". That "I" also turned out to be having a dilemma of either winning his incestuous desires or his unrequited love for ants. He was also obsessed by a goat who ate cabbages but wanted to eat rice instead. Overall, it was strangely hilarious. Since mama hated when we laugh Macam Orang Tak Ingat Tuhan, our laughter sunk to a whisper.

The game slowly turned boring. Apart from the dying Tab, mama's phone, my phone, our tummy asked to be filled and our minds couldn't think of anything creative to be written. Ayah stopped by at a mosque for us to perform jama' ta'dim before finding us a restaurant for dinner.

While waiting for our six-year-old sister, Alesha to finish her maghrib, we reread the story and giggled. Despite the long journey, absurd short story written with the collaboration of a 21-year-old, a 14-year-old and a 12-year-old, I felt light. It's good to be reunited.

I had had it listening to my peers ramble. With an adult nearby, I felt a little safe. Safe from misjudgements, from emotional rants, hatred etc. Adults might still judge me, especially Prof Ghulam, about my bad English, but he didn't. He was warm and his room was cool. I immediately felt ok.

        “Will you marry me?”

I was dumbstruck. I couldn’t answer him immediately. I was very thankful for the roses he gave me and the kind words he showered me. I appreciated his every help to my every problem. To me, he was a good friend but, a husband? I cursed at my cowardice.

“No.”

“No?”

“No. I really have to go. I have a plane to catch,” It felt wrong for not saying sorry. Heck, any of my answers would sound wrong to him.

The problem for being single for too long is that you have coped with so much on your own. You have endured insecurity and pain, you have fought through sweat and blood with your weak arms and you wept for so many nights denying loneliness for independence.  These have developed a demand for someone perfect though you know the impossibility of it. It got hard to just simply, give yourself up to someone. Today, I had been proposed to a new unfamiliar life, marriage, and to a new post, wife. A decent-looking young man whom I had met at the airport knelt before me asking me to surrender my past, present and future life to him. A strange stranger whom I secretly stared at while he was helping an old woman pushed her heavy luggage to the weighing machine. He, whom I hardly knew was the same person who spilt hot coffee on my new blazer and apologised endlessly as if he had committed a capital crime, was the one, who also said,

                “Excuse me. That’s my bag.”

Those six words marked our first awkward meeting. Then, it was all waking up with yellow roses in front of my door, an L sized jacket around my shivering shoulders, Good Morning, Love messages on my phone and a few other blissful events. All of these within two years; it was admittedly disturbing at first. I have to make sure that I didn’t step on the roses when I go out jogging. I also have to make sure that I didn’t forget to reply the cute text messages. Slowly, all of these grew on me quite oddly. Sometimes, they suffocated me. Funny, every day I began to miss my alone days.

Eating alone at the café watching people passed by while I sketched the different flowers I’ve bought for myself from a nearby florist’s. Late night drives to McD Drive Thru to satisfy my cravings for large fries and McFlurry. I hadn’t done that in a while. I had abandoned drawing too. Now at the café, I would have someone sitting opposite of me with a wide grin. I didn’t notice the weather nor the people passing by anymore. I wondered whether that lanky guy and his dog still wore matching suits. Those two had always been my good morning gag.

“Was it the way I proposed? Did I suck? Do you want me to serenade you and confess my love to a balcony?” My pace stopped. I turned around to him and saw his face darkened as he let out a long sigh. I could tell that he was disappointed but I wasn’t ready for such commitment.

        “You’re mad. I get it.”

“What are you so afraid of?” I wasn’t really sure until I subconsciously said,

       “You.”

We were put to a long silence. His hands ran through his hair and his eyes were tightly shut.

       “Me.” He chuckled.

I hated it when he chuckle like that. I felt ridiculed every time he did it.

“And the way you bring roses to me every weekend, the way you order your coffee, the way you curse at the misspelt signs, the way you get all sweaty after your baseball match, the way you smile, you cry, you laugh, you just do a lot of things! You’re driving me nuts!”

I felt stupid for listing down his normal daily activities. It made me realised how involved he was with my life.

      “Easy there.”

ATTENTION PASSENGERS FOR FLIGHT NUMBER AK5288 TO AMSTERDAM, WE ARE SORRY TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE FLIGHT WILL BE DELAYED IN THREE HOURS.

The announcement brought me to the former delay back in June 10th 2012, to the strong arms that carried the old woman’s luggage, to the kind eyes that looked at me while I was sick on the plane.

“Coffee?” He asked me softly. I needed that. I needed coffee and I certainly needed him.

“Coffee would be nice.”

Braaaaaaaaanngggggggbufffffggghhhhh!

The majestic vein-like lights started to roam the darkened sky. Slowly, the dry pavements began to wet with little raindrops. Drip upon drip they sent shivers to her weak bones. The silhouette of big trees opposite her house swung from right to left. The clouds were having a war again. The glass window was wet washed up by heavy rain. Her vision became a blur. She wiped the glass window repeatedly though she knew already that the blurriness would not go away. All she saw then were bright lights from the streets and heard the swish of tires against the tarred roads. She put her paw against the window pane. It felt cold. The glass window was smooth compared to the rough tarred road. She remembered the revolting greenish slime under her paws before. The colour never seemed to vanish even until today.  However, she was glad that the smell had gone. The mixed odour of wet garbage, mud, grass, blood and rotten food; they smelled of desolation and disgrace. It was horrific. She loved the rain though. It had this wonderful distinct smell that always seemed to soothe her unsettled heart. The every drip of it that fell onto a solid object played a rhythm of life. Drip, drip, drip, her soul waltzed to it. Drip, drip, drip, her body felt light.

Her eyes slowly shutting as her head rested onto her paws. Suddenly, a bright light flashed before her eyes. A small vehicle stopped on the side of the road. A little boy ran out of the car and disappeared into the tall grass among the big trees. Soon, he went out with a small animal in his arms. It was a very small kitten. She wondered how the little boy managed to see that tiny creature since it was quite dark and rainy. She couldn’t figure out the mystery very well as heavy breath rose slowly from her chest. She thought maybe children do have mysterious instincts. Their pure hearts could always see what we could not. The rain was stopping.

The little boy hugged the kitten tightly and his parents patted on his back like a congratulate gesture. She stared out to the boy as he wrapped the little kitten with his sweater. She also saw him wiping the little kitten’s paws with it. She looked down to hers.  A few thin furs surrounded the window seat. Her head felt heaviness so she rested it onto her paws. Little by little, the sun peeked out from behind the big trees. She saw the boy bringing the kitten into the car. The kitten looked a bit weak but she knew that it would be given a home where it could grow healthy and strong. Her gaze steadied onto the new family then her eyes began to shut tight. Now, all she could hear was the vehicle driving off. The rainwater from the tiny hanging orchid pots fell onto a broken stool outside the window. Drip, drip, drip, it played the rhythm of life. Drip, drip, drip, the raindrop fell and her pulse danced slowly to it. She felt glad that a soul was saved that day. She felt fortunate to have witnessed such wonderful event. Drip, drip, drip, the raindrop fell like a tick of a clock. Her breath drew heavier, her heartbeat stopped then she fell into eternal darkness. No raindrops were heard ever since.

I bumped into him on my way to class today. The sun shone so brightly that he looked as if he was sparkling under it. His messy hair, broad shoulders and dark eyes were like a set of Cartier in a glass box with lights focusing on it. Well, he always looks good. Be it under the sun or in the mud. Honestly, I love the days where I’ll run into him, dressing presumably nicely, and him in his pilot-ish uniform. I noticed that his cheeks are chubbier. I assumed he's eating well. So, that's good. I didn't realize that I was staring at him for quite a long time until he cast me a polite smile.  That awkward smile, an acknowledgment of how we actually know each other, however not that close, only from a number of mutual friends.

Sayangnya.

I've always wanted to keep that very smile curves up on his face every day. Always I fantasize myself lulling him whenever unpleasant emotions overwhelm him. For he brings calmness in me. It was stormy before, but at the moment, he's like a soft wind blowing on my face. He does that to me, he always brings peace. And it’s inevitable not to imagine doing things with him, but of course, nothing psychotic or dirty. Maybe it is just us hanging out, almost no talking but silently enjoying the awaken sun after a long rain.

Sayangnya.

We never really have the chance to say “It’s nice meeting you”. Quickly, I just smiled back at him. A smile of I Wish You Every Happiness in which I believe didn't look anything like it. Then, we went separate ways. That was when my key chain broke off from the ring connected to my bag. It fell down and made a sharp sound as it touched the marble floor. I turned around to get my key chain  The place that day was very quiet and almost vacant. There was nobody. He’s gone. Heh. Somebody sure walk fast.

Then I thought, Sayangnya.

He's not superior to me now. He doesn't cause my cheeks to go warm anymore. He doesn't cause my heart to go chaotic too. Somehow, though, I do admit that he will never be forgotten. Then I heard the lift went, “Second Floor, ding!” and I continued my pace to class. True, it was just a nice day.
